La "catastrophe" climatique de l'automne 1969 en Tunisie

The climatic catastrophe of the autumn of 1969 in Tunisia. The violence of the climatic disturbance which struck Tunisia in the autumn of 1969 confirms the hypothesis that this type of phenomenon, rare though they may be, helps greatly in explaining the « desertification » which has seemingly increased in certain Maugrabin regions which were once exploited. The unchecked process of erosion, which we can see for ourselves in such circumstances, has been made possible by a long period of deterioration of the environment, for which man is to blame. Central and Southern Tunisia suffered a real catastrophe. Precipitation of 600 mm to more than 900 mm fell in a series of storms between the end of September and the end of October 1969, mainly on the peri-Sahara and sub-Sahara regions. These storms started a process of erosion and deposition to such an extent that it is no exaggeration to speak of a real superficial morphological and hydrological transformation. Valleys were hollowed out and re-hollowed, ravines in the piedmont were gauged out, and detritus and deposits covered thousands of acres, in many depressions durable over-layers were created or extended, intensive eolian formations...La violence de la crise climatique ayant frappé la Tunisie à l'automne 1969 vérifie l'hypothèse d'après laquelle ces phénomènes, si exceptionnels soient-ils, contribueraient largement à expliquer la « désertification » apparemment accrue de certaines régions maghrébines, autrefois exploitées activement par l'homme. Le déchaînement sans frein des processus d'érosion, dont nous sommes les spectateurs en de telles circonstances, a été rendu possible par une longue dégradation anthropique du milieu naturel. C'est une véritable catastrophe qui a frappé les régions centrales et méridionales de la Tunisie. Des précipitations totalisant de 600 à plus de 900 mm se sont abattues en plusieurs séries orageuses, de la fin septembre à la fin octobre 1969, sur les reliefs péri-et sub-sahéliens en particulier. Elles ont déclenché des processus d'érosion et de colmatage d'une puissance telle qu'on peut parler de véritables transformations morphologiques et hydrologiques superficielles : ouverture et recalibrage de vallées, creusement de ravins de piémont, épandages et colmatages affectant des milliers d'hectares, extension ou apparition de nappes durables dans diverses dépressions, phénomènes d'éolisation intensive...Poncet Jean.
